Hey, lovely bloom! Thanks for wandering into my little paper flower garden. 🌸
This is one of the commercial paper flower displays we created after being contacted by Gucci.
For this project, paper flowers were used throughout the store display to add softness, color, and a handcrafted feeling to the space. Seeing something made from simple sheets of paper become part of a luxury retail environment was a special experience for us.
Paper flowers aren’t only for parties or home decoration. With the right scale, colors, and arrangement, they can completely change the atmosphere of a commercial space too.
I hope this project gives you a little inspiration for what can be created with paper. 🌸

At first glance, it may look like a real rose. But yes—this flower is made from crepe paper. And the good news is, you don’t need to be a professional flower designer to make something beautiful. With the right paper, a few simple shaping techniques, and a little patience, even beginners can create surprisingly realistic roses.
Could You Make a Rose Like This as a Beginner?
Yes—you can. The first one may not look exactly like this, and that’s completely normal. What matters most is learning how crepe paper stretches, how each petal curves, and how the layers come together. Once you understand those three things, the flower starts to look much more natural.

What Makes a Crepe Paper Rose Look Real?
The secret is not making every petal perfect. Real roses are full of small differences. Some petals curl more, some open wider, and some overlap unevenly. Crepe paper works beautifully because it can stretch and hold those natural-looking curves. If every petal looks exactly the same, your rose may start to look a little too well-behaved. Instead of trying to make every petal identical, focus on creating variation.
So, What Do You Actually Need to Make One?
The good news is that you don’t need a studio full of special tools. To make a basic crepe paper rose, you can start with just a few materials: good-quality crepe paper, floral wire, glue, scissors, and floral tape.
If I had to choose one thing not to compromise on, it would be the crepe paper. A paper with good stretch makes shaping the petals much easier—and saves you from wondering whether the problem is your hands or the paper. 😄
What I Actually Use to Make This Rose
What You’ll Need
18-gauge floral wire
23-gauge floral wire
90 gsm red crepe paper
90 gsm green crepe paper
Styrofoam bud
Wood glue
Wooden skewer
Rose template
A Few Notes About the Materials
You don’t need a huge collection of tools to make this crepe paper rose. The two wire gauges have slightly different jobs, and I use 90 gsm crepe paper for both the petals and the green parts of the flower. The Styrofoam bud forms the center, while the floral wire and wooden skewer help support and shape the rose as it comes together.

Sometimes two paper flowers are made from the same template, but one looks softer, fuller, and more realistic. The difference often starts with the paper itself. As a Korean paper flower designer, I’ve learned that choosing the right paper can save you time, reduce frustration, and completely change the final result.
The Paper Changes More Than You Think
Paper isn’t just the material that holds a flower together. Its thickness, stiffness, texture, and stretch can change the shape of the petals, the fullness of the flower, and even how realistic the finished piece looks.
Do Different Paper Flowers Need Different Types of Paper?
Not always. Different paper flowers often need different types of paper because each design needs a different balance of softness, strength, flexibility, and texture. A large flower may need thicker paper to hold its shape, while a delicate flower may look better with softer paper that bends and curves more naturally.
What Paper Works Best for Giant Paper Flowers?
For example, EVACRAFTS giant daisies are made with 90 gsm paper to keep the petals soft and natural-looking, even though the flowers are large. Because oversized petals can easily sag, the petals are reinforced with wire and layered paper for extra support. The wire also makes it easier to adjust the shape and angle of each petal, which is especially helpful when creating a fuller and more balanced flower.
Best Crepe Paper Brands for Paper Flowers: What I Actually Use
I’ve used crepe paper made in Italy, Germany, and China, and personally, Italian crepe paper has been the clear winner for me. One of the products I actually use is Cartotecnica Rossi Crepe Extra 180 g, made in Italy. I like its stretch, texture, and the way it holds a shape while still allowing the petals to look soft and natural.
German crepe paper has also worked well for me. In comparison, the Chinese-made crepe papers I’ve tried were noticeably less consistent and often more difficult to shape. Some can be perfectly fine for practice or simple decorations, especially if price is the priority, but when I care about the final quality of the flower, I personally reach for Italian crepe paper first.
So, Why Do Some Paper Flowers Look Better Than Others?
The answer is not simply “better paper.” Beautiful paper flowers come from choosing the right paper for the design and understanding how that paper behaves. A soft paper may need extra support. A thicker paper may need more shaping. Crepe paper, cardstock, and other papers each have their own strengths.
In the end, the best paper is the one that helps you create the look you want. Once you understand the material, you can spend less time fighting the paper and more time shaping the flower the way you imagined it.
As a Korean woman and paper flower designer, I still feel a little shy about sharing my work and thoughts with people around the world. But when it comes to paper flowers, there is so much I genuinely want to share—the little things I’ve discovered along the way, the mistakes I’ve made, the materials I love, and the small techniques that can make a big difference.
I hope this blog becomes a place where you can find genuinely useful information, discover new inspiration, and enjoy making paper flowers a little more each time. I’ll keep sharing the ideas, experiences, and lessons I’ve learned from my worktable here in Korea.
Thanks for stopping by my little paper flower garden, my lovely bloom. 🌼 See you among the petals again!
